CSPE FAQs

SECTION 1 — PALLIATIVE CARE PRACTITIONER PATHWAY

  1. Do I need a healthcare background?
No. The Palliative Pathway is designed for anyone called to offer compassionate, non-medical support. No clinical training is required.
  2. Is this clinical or medical training?
No. This pathway teaches relational, emotional, and communication-based skills. It does not include medical tasks, clinical procedures, or diagnosis.
  3. How does Tier 1 differ from Tier 2?
  • Tier 1: Foundations in presence, communication, boundaries, emotional steadiness, and the APFCCM model.
  • Tier 2: Applied companioning with trauma awareness, family systems, existential support, and real-case integration.
  1. Do I need to take Tier 1 before Tier 2?
Yes. Tier 2 builds directly from the concepts and competencies in Tier 1.
  2. Do I need to attend live?
Yes. Live online attendance is required due to the relational and interactive nature of the training.
  3. What if I miss a live session?
Recordings are provided for review. Missing classes may affect your eligibility for certification.
  4. Why is an interview required?
    To ensure:
  • clarity around program expectations
  • readiness for emotionally meaningful work
  • appropriate grounding and steadiness

The interview is supportive and brief.

  1. What level of emotional readiness do I need?
You don’t have to be fully healed. You simply need to be grounded enough to participate without becoming overwhelmed or destabilized.
  2. How does the Practicum work?
It is a 6-month, 200-hour applied learning phase with ongoing mentor support. You will companion individuals in approved community settings while applying APFCCM and reflective practice.

    Possible settings include:
  • hospice volunteer programs
  • seniors’ centres
  • community programs
  • approved organizational partners
    Availability varies by region.

Refunds follow the policy provided at registration. Refunds are limited once a course begins.

  1. Who is this series for?

  2. Is this therapy or counseling?

SECTION 3 — CROSS-CREDIT FAQ

  1. How do cross-credit tuition benefits work?
Students who complete one pathway receive reduced tuition for the advanced level of the other because several key learning themes overlap between Tier 2 (Palliative) and Track 2 (Grief Educator Training).

While each pathway has its own focus, the following competencies show up in both advanced levels:

  • trauma-aware communication
    • emotional steadiness during intensity
    • cultural humility
    • inclusive facilitation
    • narrative and story-based teaching tools
    • understanding grief as part of the palliative landscape
    • ethical boundaries and non-medical scope
    • supporting families during distress
    • reflective practice and grounded presence

Because these foundations do not need to be retaught, tuition is reduced.
However, all curriculum hours and all live sessions remain required — students still participate fully in each pathway.

  1. Which modules or themes cross over between Tier 2 and Track 2?
While module titles differ, the shared themes include:
  • responding to emotional intensity with steadiness
    • reading and supporting diverse family systems
    • understanding grief reactions inside broader relational contexts
    • trauma-aware pacing and containment
    • cultural and spiritual considerations in moments of distress
    • maintaining boundaries and recognizing referral moments
    • guiding reflective learning without entering therapeutic scope
    • applying story and lived experience respectfully in learning spaces

Students gain a richer, more integrated understanding by encountering these themes through both lenses:

  • palliative companioning
  • grief literacy education
  1. Should I take Palliative or Grief first?
    There is no “right” sequence.
Choose based on which calling is stronger right now:
  • If you feel called to end-of-life, illness, aging, and family support → begin with Palliative.
    • If you’re focused on loss, meaning-making, and understanding grief → begin with Grief Track 1.

The cross-credit benefits apply no matter which pathway you start with.

  1. Does completing one pathway reduce the hours in the other?
No. Cross-credit reduces tuition, not learning hours.
Each pathway has its own curriculum, competencies, and live learning requirements.

All students must attend:

  • Tier 1 and Tier 2 (for Palliative)
  • Track 1 and Track 2 (for Grief)

No prior experience replaces the required hours.
